Big bad boy electromagnet stator less motor


We have fashioned our own electromagnet from a 3/4 inch by 8 inch steel bolt and nut, 225 feet of 26 gauge wire and 160 feet of 22 gauge wire. The 26 gauge wire spools are in series with each other and the 22 gauge spools are in series with themselves. The 26 gauge wire is about 1000 or more turns while the 22 gauge wire is about 600 turns. The two sets of spools of respective gauge wires are connected together in parallel. The 26 gauge wire spools have a resistance of 10 ohms. The 22 gauge wire spools have a resistance of 3.3 ohms. Power is provided by 3 9 volt Lithium Ion batteries connected in parallel and producing about 8.3 volts. The 26 gauge wire at 10 ohms gets 2.5 amps for 1000 turns while the 22 gauge wire gets 0.83 amps for 600 turns. The total is about 2,380 amp-turns. This is a very powerful magnetic field. The electromagnet acts like the armature of a motor with the Earth as its stator or permanent magnet. There is an arduino circuit with a photo cell programmed to reverse the polarity of the electromagnet as it turns past the lamp. Our entire model weighs well over 1 lb and it uses an 11 inch aluminum frying pan filled with water for its bearings. This type of bearing offers very little friction but some so that the motor reaches a top speed after about 4 rotations. We clocked that top speed at about 18 seconds for one full revolution. Why use 9v batteries? Not really sure but they seemed to work out well without overheating the 22 gauge wire. Use some caution if you try this experiment at home because the batteries can overheat if too much current is drawn from them. We believe there is probably an ideal combination of gauge, voltage and turns that would produce the fastest turning motor. Why not put the power source outside of the moving electromagnet?
