RM 900 VB – The latest high-capacity machine


Ballast bed cleaning is the topic of our next
feature. “Material recycling in the track under repair”
is a logical development, considering the fact that the excavated material is processed
anyway. So why not recycle on the spot, inside the
machine, and then return the reclaimed material to the track immediately? While also saving new material and transport
capacity! The RM 900 VB is not the first machine of
its kind by Plasser & Theurer, but it is unique in its wide range of equipment. Let’s follow the sequence of work during full
operation. The ballast is excavated by powerful excavating
chains and sent through a number of stations: firstly, the recycling process where coarse
soiling and foreign matter is removed and the ballast stones are sharpened. After this, the ballast material passes through
the double screening unit to reclaim the re-useable portion of ballast. Finally, the cleaned ballast is placed and
distributed by conveyor belts and a ploughing unit. New ballast can be added in any quantity,
as required. A sweeper unit with full functionality is
also incorporated: to grade the ballast as it is placed, to sweep the ties and to pick
up the surplus ballast. Two dynamic stabilising units ensure the greatest
possible initial quality of the track geometry. And last but not least: measurement of the
track geometry and recording of all operational parameters in compliance with DB regulations. Not forgetting the MFS units which are a perfect
addition to the machine for supplying and taking away the material. At the front, they are loaded with spoil,
and at the rear they supply the new ballast. The finished track is already compacted and
provides the best foundation for all the following stages of work.
