The Basics of the Breaker Box / Electrical Panel in Your Home

This is your breaker box. All of the breakers are hopefully labeled
with an electrician that has good hand writing. Your bedrooms and smoke detectors are going
to have these special kind of breakers, they’re called AFCI or Arc Fault Circuit Interrupter. They have a push to test feature on them,
but as with any of these breakers when they pop, they’re going to pop in the middle
like this so you can’t just push them to on, you have to cycle them to off, and then
back to on, you’re back in business. The idea behind these is they’re a little
bit more sensitive, they’re required by code. But if you have a lamp with a bad cord, maybe
has a short in it, it could be a fire hazard, this will trip. So we don’t have a fire, which is good. But sometimes your vacuum cleaner can cause
these to trip, because there’s arcing on the brushes in the motor, and this doesn’t
know the difference. If it does that, come out and reset it, and
try a different outlet.
